Fasting is a cornerstone worship in Islam.
Surprisingly the discovery and official recognition of Autophagy in 2016 by the Nobel prize made this the mainstream tool for a healthy life style and to fight many diseases. Here are few references from the Quran and Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessing be upon him).
“183. Believers, fasting is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you so that you become mindful of Allah [1]. 184. Fast for a fixed number of days, but if any of you is ill or travelling then let them fast an equivalent number of days later. Those who are unable to fast must pay compensation – if they can afford it – to feed a needy person. The one who gives more voluntarily is rewarded, but to fast would be better for you if you knew.” - Surah Al-Baqarah (2:183-184)
“The Prophet (peace be upon him) was keen to fast on Mondays and Thursdays”
- Al-Tirmidhi
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “My close friend [the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)] advised me to do three things which I will not give up until I die: fasting three days of each month*, praying Duha, and sleeping after Witr. (Narrated by al-Bukhari, 1124; Muslim, 721)
*known as ayaam-al-beedh i.e. 13, 14, and 15 of every lunar month
“O children of Adam! Wear your beautiful apparel at every time and place of prayer; eat and drink, but waste not by excess. For Allah loves not the wasters.”
– Al- Qur’an, Al-A’araf (7:31)
“Nothing is worse than a person who fills his stomach. It should be enough for the son of Adam to have a few bites to satisfy his hunger. If he wishes more, it should be: One-third for his food, one-third for his liquids, and one-third for his breath.”
– Al Tirmidhi
